As a nationally significant organisation within NHS Wales, Velindre University NHS Trust delivers specialist cancer services for South East Wales alongside critical blood, transplant and diagnostic services for patients and hospitals across the whole of Wales. Our work is complex, safety‑critical and deeply purposeful, underpinned by a highly skilled and committed workforce.

The Trust is now at a pivotal moment. Alongside the operational and financial pressures facing the wider health system, Velindre is completing one of the most ambitious transformation programmes in Welsh healthcare: development of the new, state‑of‑the‑art Velindre Cancer Centre; and the modernisation of Wales’s national blood and transplant service.

Our ten‑year strategy, Destination 2033, sets a clear ambition to deliver high‑quality, sustainable and person‑centred care; to be a beacon for research and innovation; and to place the wellbeing and engagement of our people at the heart of everything we do.

Following a period of change, we are now looking to appoint a substantive Executive Director of Workforce and OD who will play a central role in embedding this change and supporting our workforce of 7,500 to thrive as we focus on realising our commitment to improving outcomes for patients, donors and communities across Wales into reality.

We are seeking an exceptional, values‑driven leader with a strong track record at Board level in leading people strategy, organisational development and large‑scale workforce transformation within complex, highly regulated environments. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in shaping inclusive cultures, building organisational capability and delivering sustainable workforce models that enable clinical and operational excellence. Above all else, this is a role for an authentic and visible leader, someone able to inspire trust, engage a diverse workforce and work in true partnership with clinicians and system partners. With a strong commitment to wellbeing, equity and continuous improvement, the successful individual will demonstrate the courage and compassion to lead through change, embedding high performance, learning and innovation at scale, while ensuring that our people feel valued, supported and empowered to deliver outstanding care for the populations we serve.

This is a defining opportunity to strengthen culture, restore confidence and shape the Trust’s next chapter and to make a lasting difference to cancer and specialist services in Wales.
