Executive Director of Nursing

Velindre University NHS Trust

As a nationally significant organisation within NHS Wales, Velindre University NHS Trust delivers specialist cancer services for South East Wales alongside critical blood, transplant and diagnostic services for patients and hospitals across the whole of Wales. Our work is complex, safety‑critical and deeply purposeful, underpinned by a highly skilled and committed workforce.

The Trust is now at a pivotal moment. Alongside the operational and financial pressures facing the wider health system, Velindre is completing one of the most ambitious transformation programmes in Welsh healthcare: development of the new, state‑of‑the‑art Velindre Cancer Centre; and the modernisation of Wales’s national blood and transplant service.

Our ten‑year strategy, Destination 2033, sets a clear ambition to deliver high‑quality, sustainable and person‑centred care; to be a beacon for research and innovation; and to place the wellbeing and engagement of our people at the heart of everything we do.

Following a period of change, we have recently appointed our substantive Chief Executive and are focussed now on developing the executive leadership team to lead us in delivering our ambitions.  As such we are seeking a substantive Executive Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals and Healthcare Scientists to join us as a key member of the Trust Board and Executive Team, providing visible, compassionate and credible leadership across the organisation while shaping strategy and influencing the wider NHS Wales agenda. The role carries responsibility for professional leadership of nursing, allied health professions and healthcare science services, as well as executive leadership for quality, safety, clinical governance, patient and donor experience, safeguarding, infection prevention and control, workforce development and professional standards. Working closely with colleagues across the Board, academic partners and national stakeholders, you will help lead the delivery of Destination 2033, ensuring that Velindre continues to provide outstanding specialist services while embracing innovation, research, service transformation and sustainable improvement for the people of Wales.

We are seeking an accomplished and inspirational nurse leader with current NMC registration and a proven track record of operating successfully at Board level within a complex healthcare environment. You will bring extensive executive leadership experience, deep expertise in professional practice, quality and governance, and a sophisticated understanding of workforce challenges across modern healthcare systems. Equally important will be your ability to lead and influence across professional boundaries, providing strategic and professional leadership to nurses, allied health professionals and healthcare scientists, and creating a culture in which all professions can thrive and contribute to service excellence. An inclusive and values-driven leader, you will champion equality, diversity and staff wellbeing, demonstrate the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and build strong partnerships within and beyond the organisation

This is a unique opportunity to lead, inspire and develop a diverse community of nurses, allied health professionals and healthcare scientists at a time of significant transformation. Through your leadership, you will help shape the culture, quality and professional excellence that will enable Velindre to deliver exceptional care and improve outcomes for patients and donors across Wales.
