Executive Medical Director

Velindre University NHS Trust

Velindre University NHS Trust is a provider of high specialist services across Wales.  We deliver specialist cancer services for South East Wales and specialist blood, transplant and diagnostic services for patients and hospitals across the whole of Wales. Our work is complex, safety‑critical and deeply purposeful, underpinned by a highly skilled and committed workforce.

The Trust wishes to be recognised as excellent by donors, its patients and peer organisations across the UK and Europe.  It is now at a pivotal moment; completing a nationally significant transformation programme in its cancer service with the final element being the opening of  the new, state‑of‑the‑art Velindre Cancer Centre in Spring 2027; and the continued transformation of Wales’s national blood and transplant service. These position the Trust well to play an enhanced wider system leadership role across Wales; working in collaboration with Local Health Boards, academia and wider partners to improve clinical outcomes across the nation.

Velindre's influence extends far beyond the direct delivery of clinical services. As host to nationally significant organisations including NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) and Health Technology Wales (HTW), the Trust occupies a unique position at the centre of innovation, improvement and system leadership across NHS Wales. This breadth of responsibility creates an unparalleled platform from which to shape policy, accelerate service improvement and influence the future direction of healthcare at both regional and national level.

Looking ahead, our ten-year strategy, Destination 2033, sets an ambitious course for the organisation: delivering high-quality, sustainable and person-centred care; strengthening our position as a leader in research and innovation; and fostering a culture in which our people can thrive and perform at their very best.

Following the appointment of our substantive Chief Executive, we are now seeking an outstanding Executive Medical Director to help shape the next chapter of our organisation and its contribution to the health of Wales.

This is a rare opportunity to join the Board of a nationally regarded specialist healthcare organisation. As Executive Medical Director, you will provide strategic medical leadership across the Trust, acting as the principal clinical advisor to the Board while championing quality, safety, innovation and excellence in patient care. You will lead and inspire our clinical community, driving transformation across cancer services, blood services and national specialist programmes at a time of significant opportunity and change.

Operating at the heart of the executive team, you will play a key role in shaping strategy, influencing policy and strengthening partnerships across NHS Wales, Welsh Government, academia and the wider health and care system. You will also be a visible advocate for research, education and innovation, helping to ensure Velindre remains at the forefront of clinical advancement and service development.

We are seeking a GMC-registered medical practitioner with substantial experience gained at consultant level within a comparably complex operating context. An accomplished and inspirational leader, you will combine strategic vision with the ability to build trust, influence across organisational boundaries and bring people together behind a shared ambition. Most importantly, you will share our commitment to improving outcomes, advancing innovation and delivering exceptional care for the people of Wales.

If you are motivated by the opportunity to shape the future of specialist healthcare on a national stage, we would be delighted to hear from you.
